BIO.
Roger Sanguino was born in Venezuela in 1968. He began his artistic training at the "Federico Brandt" Art Institute and the "Arte & Fuego" Workshop School, both in Caracas, Venezuela, between 1990-1996. From then on, he began participating in official Regional and National art competitions throughout Venezuela.
In his early days, drawing and painting were the disciplines in which he pursued his personal quest, exploring the biological diversity of animal species, a theme he also developed in fused glass.
Around 2003, Roger Sanguino traveled to Barcelona, Spain, where he undertook formal studies at the Escola Massana de Barcelona: the Higher Level Training Cycle in Painting (2003-2006), and later the Higher Level Training Cycle in Sculpture (2011-2014). While studying, he participated in various artistic confrontations, such as competitions, biennials, and art fairs within and outside Spain.
Statement.
His contact with Barcelona sparked his interest in themes other than animal symbolism. The theme of portraiture appeared in his painting, which he developed through a persistent creation of memory portraits, forming mosaic-like compositions.
Subsequently, his portraits shed the backgrounds from which they emerged. The portrayed character formally showed a certain volumetric quality. It was then that he felt the urge or need for those characters to leap into three dimensions. His sculpture studies provided him with the theoretical and technical information to begin constructing a sculptural discourse, a work he continues to develop today, alternating it with his pictorial work. As a result of this research, combining painting and sculpture, Sanguino established a bridge between both disciplines that coexist on the same surface, giving rise to a hybrid work.
His most recent work is part of a research centered on the human being, where the theme of the Portrait and the body form two lines of work, grouped into three clearly defined segments: Protected Portrait, Portrait and Geometry, and We Are a Number. In his work, he explores concepts such as the mind, body language, the particular and the universal, the relationship with the other, time, portraiture, geometry, identity; which, together with formal aspects, emphasize the importance of a double drawing: one lying on the surface of the work and the other floating above it, through the intervention of piano strings, wires, rods, and steel nets. It is a three-dimensional drawing that traverses space, incorporating emptiness into the work, a light drawing that dialogues with volume, enveloping it, establishing limits, spaces, and generating structures like a grid. Recently, he has incorporated barcodes and QR codes into his work as new forms of our corporate identity.
