Collection: Evangelina Esparza I Imprint and Permanence.

In Evangelina Esparza’s work, the relationship between art and life is not presented as a program or an inherited slogan, but as a sensitive continuity. Her images do not seek to illustrate a preconceived idea or confirm a discourse: they arise from experience, memory, and the familiar, transforming the intimate into a shared space. The figures that appear in this exhibition—young women, winged beings, animals, silent portraits, lingering presences—are not presented as closed allegories. The recurring depiction of small birds, deer, caps, or berets that evoke nests or shelters introduces a series of elements that refer to a symbolic imaginary where the human, the animal, and the natural intertwine without rigid hierarchies. They do not function as affirmed myths or narrative theses, but as open forms of visual thought, capable of embracing biographical experiences and universal resonances simultaneously. The recurrence of the feminine in her work does not operate as an identity slogan or as an illustration of a prior discourse.

Instead, it manifests as an exploration of subjectivity through care, memory, and the relationship with the environment. The figures do not impose themselves or confront: they inhabit the pictorial space from a contained presence, where the body appears as a place of transit between the visible and the interior. The power of these works lies not only in the motifs they represent but in how they are formally constructed.

It is in the overall composition and its micro-decisions—the relationship between sharp areas and more diffuse passages, between detail and synthesis, between contained form and the breathing of space—where the image acquires density. The work retains the trace of its execution: the viewer can read in it the pressure of the gesture, its speed, the changes in rhythm and direction, like someone following a trace fixed on the surface.

Her drawings reveal a precise and sensitive calligraphy, where each stroke does not suspend time but condenses it. The surface does not act as a neutral support but as an active field that offers resistance, adherence, and stratification, allowing the gesture to accumulate, correct, and densify. Added to this is a subtle luminous dimension: the interaction between graphite and the mineral loads incorporated into the paper's preparation generates minimal glints and iridescence that activate according to the viewing angle, making the image never appear completely stable.

The work is thus offered as an instant charged with duration, capable of recalling the movement of the hand that produced it. It demands an active gaze, attentive not only to the final form but to the succession of pressures, rhythms, speeds, and luminous variations that have been inscribed in the material. In her paintings—oils and egg temperas—materiality acquires a decisive role. The smooth and slippery copper support conditions specific calligraphic possibilities and plastic resources: the gesture does not embed but skids, slides, and modulates, leaving a different trace than the friction of canvas or the absorption of wood. The painting is organized in layers that not only construct the image but regulate its response to light.

The transparency of the oil is intensified; the interaction between different densities, glints, and impastos generates strata where light does not fade but reverberates, and where color maintains its saturation even in the brightest areas. These material qualities are difficult—if not impossible—to transfer to photographic reproductions and make the work gain a decisive presence in direct experience. The scale of the drawings, the way the paper surface is prepared—through glazes, mineral loads, or pearlescent materials—and the inherent shine of graphite, along with the type of glass used in the framing, whose minimal reflection plays a subtle role, form part of a conjunction of decisions that add physical weight to the whole and turn the image into an artifact whose experience is inevitably sculptural and installational. Painting and drawing are not offered merely to be seen, but to be traversed with the body and with time.

The use of pictorial tradition—for example, in resonances that may refer to Simon Vouet or Rosa Bonheur—does not operate here as nostalgia or as an erudite citation. It functions as a living substratum, naturally assumed, that shifts towards a contemporary sensibility. Her figures belong to a familiar, everyday, and mundane environment; however, they inhabit settings that refer to an imprecise time, where inherited language is activated from a personal and present experience. In a contemporary context that often distrusts beauty, delicacy, or fantasy, these works embrace these registers without irony or cynicism. Not as an escape, but as a form of silent resistance. Beauty appears here as a complex territory, where the fragile and the disturbing, the refined and the strange, coexist without canceling each other out.

Evangelina Esparza’s works do not aspire to stand outside the world or break with it. They are offered as objects designed to inhabit daily life, to accompany and densify it. Images that do not impose a message or demand a single reading, but a prolonged coexistence: works that allow themselves to be read over time and that endure.
