A Ghost Story, solo exhibition by Jose A. Vallejo.

"A ghost story” by José A. Vallejo – ProjectARTE20

A ghost story is born from the transformation of one of José A. Vallejo's (Madrid, 1984) characters into a ghost by wearing a sheet.

This mannequin was the penultimate addition to the artist's toy collection. Since 2007, he has used dolls, mostly represented through classic drawing techniques such as pencil and markers, to create a personal diary in which he expresses his concerns.

This naive ghost image is one of the most prolific ways of representing spirits. What we can sometimes interpret as naive or childish is the result of one of the most basic concerns of humankind throughout history: the need not to be forgotten.

The lack of linearity in the pieces of the series, but the awareness that they belong to a single story, moves us through time jumps in a story about loss, pain, and fear. A reflection on human existence and what human existence itself is, since everything we do will eventually be forgotten over time.

The autobiographical element is an essential part of the pieces, which, despite their very simple composition, attempt to push the technical limits of materials in their phantasmagorical transparencies. They speak to us of someone aware that what defines us as individuals are the relationships we have with our fellow human beings, and that the most we can aspire to is to leave a mark on the people we love and who love us, since people bear the marks of those who inhabit them, those who possess them... just like haunted houses.
